What is yoga therapy?
According to TKV Desikachar, “Yoga therapy is a self-empowering process, where the care-seeker, with the help of the Yoga therapist, implements a personalized and evolving Yoga practice, that not only addresses the illness in a multi-dimensional manner, but also aims to alleviate his/her suffering in a progressive, non-invasive and complementary manner. Depending upon the nature of the illness, Yoga therapy can not only be preventative or curative, but also serve a means to manage the illness, or facilitate healing in the person at all levels.”
In a typical yoga therapy session, we will begin with a check-in process where we will explore how you are doing now and connect you with your body, emotions, and inner thoughts. Based on your answers, I will then guide you through a customized yoga therapy practice that will incorporate meditation, breathing practices, movements, and specific poses based on your physical, mental, and spiritual needs. After completing the practice, we will have some time to discuss how you are feeling, what worked/what didn’t, and I might suggest some additional practices for you to do on your own before the next session.
What is Ayurveda?
According to Dr. Vasant Lad, “Ayurveda is considered by many scholars to be the oldest healing science. In Sanskrit, Ayurveda means “The Science of Life.” Ayurvedic knowledge originated in India more than 5,000 years ago and is often called the “Mother of All Healing.””
Ayurvedic healing focuses on bringing you into balance with your unique doshic constitution or prakriti that you are born with. We will begin the healing process by assessing your current state of imbalance or vikriti, and then I will suggest customized yoga therapy and spiritual healing techniques to bring you back to your original state of balance or prakriti. Ayurveda is an energetic system of healing that honors your innate healing capacity and inner intelligence.
What is Somatics?
Somatic therapy is a unique therapy method that focuses on the mind-body connection. The basis of somatic therapy is the theory that your nervous system and body patterns are holding your emotions through muscular tension and specific sensations. By getting in touch with these sensations and body patterns, we can consciously release them and target healing within your nervous system on a deeper level. There are many different forms of somatic therapy, including Hanna Somatics, Somatic Experiencing, and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. I use a combination of these techniques to help you access deeper healing in your body, mind, and soul all at the same time.
Is this a replacement for conventional mental health or physical health treatment?
No. All consultations, sessions, and protocols are evaluated from an Ayurvedic or yogic perspective only and not from a Western medical perspective. These consultations do not take the place of a medical evaluation. If any findings suggestive of a possible medical imbalance are found as a result of this consultation, I will refer you to your personal physician or other licensed healthcare professionals for further evaluation.
What if I am already seeing a mental or physical health provider?
Wonderful! I often work together or in conjunct with other mental and physical health providers. Everything that we do together can be an excellent complement to any other healing modalities you are engaging in.
What if I am already taking pharmaceutical medications or want to in the future?
Wonderful! I support your choice either way. Incorporating an Ayurvedic routine and yoga therapy practices also assists your body in metabolizing your medications properly and is an excellent complementary therapy.
Can sessions be covered by health insurance?
The short answer: maybe! Currently, yoga therapy is not directly covered by insurance companies, despite the ample evidence that yoga therapy is a beneficial healing modality. Some insurance companies do, however, provide reimbursement for out-of-pocket payments, depending on your coverage. I suggest you call your insurance company for clarification. You may need to get a referral from a doctor who will submit on your behalf, but this is still subject to your insurance company’s discretion. You can also possibly use a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to get reimbursement for payment.
Do these sessions include therapeutic nutrition, herbs, and lifestyle guidance?
No. If you are interested in customized nutrition, herbs, and lifestyle guidance, please check out my holistic healing paths.
Can you help me lose weight?
I am a Healthy At Every Size (HAES) and Intuitive Eating (IE) Practitioner. I help guide you through yoga therapy practices based on your health, the results of your lab work, and the needs of your symptoms. I believe you can be healthy at every size, but if you have a goal to lose weight, we can definitely address that and talk about ways for you to feel more comfortable with your weight. My goal as a holistic practitioner and yoga therapist is to show you how to nourish your body and balance your health to ease your symptoms, and many of my clients realize that this also results in them looking and feeling their best.
What if I don't have mental health issues, can I still work with you?
Absolutely! I would love to support anyone with yoga therapy. Feel free to book your appointment and let’s get started on your wellness journey.
Can you also help me with my other specific health issues?
Absolutely! I am trained in healing all forms of physical, mental, and spiritual imbalance.
Do you work with all genders?
Yes! All of my services are available for people of all genders. I am also LGBTQIA+ friendly.
Do you work with people under 18 years old?
Yes, I work with all people regardless of their age. However, I will need a parent or guardian to sign a consent form if you are under 18 years old.
Are sessions in person or online?
Currently, all sessions are offered online only through a HIPAA-compliant practice management system.
Are scholarships available for financial hardship?
Yes, I do offer scholarships on a case by case basis. If this is something that you need to make sessions accessible to you, please let me know during your free intro call and we can discuss different possibilities further.
